What's Left: Reed has been pursued by debt collectors and even taken to court. That's forced Reed to make difficult choices. \"There's always a sacrifice,\" she said. \"You just do without some things to pay for other things.\"
She has adjusted, she said. \"You just do what you have to do.\" What angers Reed, though, is how she's been treated by the cancer center where she goes for periodic checkups to make sure the cancer remains in remission. When she recently tried to make an appointment, a financial counselor told her she couldn't schedule it until she made a plan to pay her bills.
Three months later, after he was diagnosed with diabetes, another complication sent him back to the hospital. In December 2020, COVID-19 put him there again. \"I look back at that year and feel lucky I even survived,\" Zipprich said.
What's Broken: Of the nation's 20 most populous counties, none has a higher prevalence of medical debt than Tarrant County, where Fort Worth is located. Second is adjacent Dallas County, credit bureau data shows.
Jericho Share spokesperson Mark Hubbard said in a statement that the organization is \"issuing full refunds when there is consumer confusion\" and is continuing to \"evaluate and update our marketing efforts to increase transparency and awareness.\"
What happened: Lucille Brooks was stunned to discover a nursing home in Monroe County, N.Y., was suing her. She had never been a patient there. Nor had her husband. \"I thought this was crazy,\" she said, figuring it had to be a mistake.
The bill was for care her brother, James Lawson, received in summer 2019. He'd been hospitalized for complications from a diabetes medication. The hospital released him to the county-run nursing home, where Brooks had visited him a few times. No one ever talked to her about billing, she said. And she was never asked to sign anything.
The county alleged that Brooks should have used her brother's assets to pay his bills and that she was therefore personally responsible for his debt. Attached to the suit was an admissions agreement with what looked like Brooks' signature.
Consumer advocates say nursing homes slip the agreements into papers that family members sign when an older parent or sick friend is admitted. Sometimes people are told they must sign, a violation of federal law. \"They are given a stack of forms and told, 'Sign here, sign there. Click here, click there,\" said Miriam Sheline, managing attorney at Pro Seniors, a nonprofit law firm in Cincinnati.
Through the surgeries and treatments, Peters kept working so she would not lose her insurance. She took on extra work to pay some of the bills. Five days a week, she works back-to-back shifts at both a mental health crisis center and a clinic where she counsels teenagers, some of whom are suicidal. Last year, three friends on the East Coast paid off some of the debt.
One day the baby stopped moving, Logan went to the hospital, where her blood pressure spiked, her head throbbed, and she blacked out. Hours later, her daughter was born by cesarean section, weighing only 3 pounds. Logan had health insurance through work, but she was responsible for out-of-pocket charges. She and her baby were in a health crisis, so the issue of money didn't come up: \"That conversation just wasn't had in that moment.\"
Additional research was conducted by the Urban Institute, which analyzed credit bureau and other demographic data on poverty, race, and health status to explore where medical debt is concentrated in the U.S. and what factors are associated with high debt levels.
Now that DRUMMOND'S PICTORIAL ATLAS OF NORTH CAROLINA is a reality, the Editor pauses for a moment to review the fifteen months spent in the preparation of this volume. The Editor recalls the numerous auto and rail trips that have taken him to every corner of this great State; recalls the hours spent taking photographs, compiling data and writing the 98,000 words of descriptive matter contained herein and recalls the many nights spent in arranging the innumerable details involved in getting such a volume ready for publication. Then there were statements to investigate and verify and proofs to correct besides a mass of miscellaneous work, including trimming, mounting and lettering the photographs and designing the pages. Yet the Editor could never have done all the work involved without the assistance of a vast army of organizations and individuals throughout the State, who greatly aided in the compilation of the data used. While all these organizations and individuals cannot possibly be thanked separately the Editor is herewith attempting to list below those who had a greater part in making this volume possible.
The Editor's thanks are also due the one hundred and fifty people throughout the State who have verified the various statements contained in this volume. The newspapers of the State have always given us publicity where requested and they have done much to pave the way for the favorable reception of this publication.
You have read this work on your own State, and we feel sure that you liked it. Therefore you will want to spread the glad news of North Carolina's leadership as outlined in DRUMMOND'S PICTORIAL ATLAS OF NORTH CAROLINA.
North Carolina lies on the same parallel of latitude as the central Mediterranean basin, the most favored climatic region on the globe. While this position in the warm temperate zone determines the chief climatic features of the State, these are modified by various causes. The influence of elevation in the Western Section predominates. While Mt. Mitchell, the highest point east of the Rockies, is 6,711 feet, the average height of this area is 4000 feet. In this area where the winters are more severe and the summers cooler than in the Piedmont area, the dryness of the air makes the climate more salubrious. The Blue Ridge protects the area from the bitterly cold winds of the northwest, giving an average annual mean temperature of 55 degrees. In this area there are many valleys whose winter climate is as mild as that of the Piedmont where snow is seldom seen. Eastern Carolina feels the effect of the presence of the sea which tends to lessen both the diurnal and seasonal changes of temperature and to increase the amount of precipitation. Although the Gulf Stream is not near enough to greatly affect it, the climate is semi-tropical and is very enjoyable both winter and summer. Between these two sections of the State every variation of climate may be found, suitable to any taste. Snowfall in the State is very light and seldom remains on the ground more than two or three days. 59ce067264
